World Day of the Poor | Diocese of Portland

Pope Leo’s words on World Day of the Poor:

Pope Francis has declared Sunday 17 November 2024 to be the eighth World Day of the Poor, with the theme of “The prayer of the poor rises up to God."

The expression that gives the 2024 World Day of the Poor its theme is taken from the Book of Sirach (cf. Sir 21:5), which Pope Francis says is not sufficiently known and deserves to be discovered for the richness of its themes.

In his message for this World Day of the Poor, the Holy Father reiterates that "the poor hold a privileged place in God’s heart" and invites everyone to learn to pray for the poor and to pray together with the poor, with humility and trust.

Term of Four Years

We currently have a vacancy for a Parent Governor Representative for a term of office of 4 years. Parent Governors should have a genuine commitment to the educational, personal and spiritual development of students and in particular to the wellbeing of the school community as a whole. Governors work voluntarily.

Governors attend 4–7 meetings per year, each lasting approximately 2 hours. There is significant responsibility attached to the role and a few hours’ reading required in preparation for each meeting. Schools could not function without their governing boards, so serving as a governor is an integral part of supporting and shaping the life of our school community.

Mrs Botham, Mrs Jordan and the rest of our dedicated Governing Board would be delighted to hear from parents who are interested in contributing their time and skills to help guide the strategic direction of our wonderful school.

Please click here or visit the school website for further information about the role of a parent governor and what to do if you are interested in applying for the role.

Class 5 Highlights This week has been full of energy and learning! In PE, the children have been busy mastering dodgeball skills and teamwork. In Maths, they've been working hard on adding and subtracting using the column method with exchanging. In DT, we kicked off our new unit "Adapting a Recipe" with some delicious biscuit taste testing! It's been a fantastic mix of active, creative, and mathematical fun for Class 5!
