'Where Every Heart is Sacred'

W/C 09/03/26

Literacy

This week we continue reading the story The Odd Egg. We are using the book as a springboard to learn about chicks and the lifecycle of a chicken.

We are also getting some very special visitors to our Reception class this week: real chicks that will hatch out of eggs over the next few days! Make sure you ask your child about what they have observed each day.

Maths

In maths we are talking about time. First we are experiencing intervals of time and trying to work out how long they are by counting actions e.g. How many star jumps can you do in 10 seconds? And in 30 seconds? You can help your child by playing games with a sand timer/ digital timer.

Next we are learning to sequence days of the week and activities, looking at visual timetables. Talk to your child about what day of the week it is, and what things you do e.g. It's Friday, so we are going swimming after school. Also practise talking about the order of events using the words after and before.

Towards the end of the week, we will be recapping the composition of numbers 7 and 8.

Phonics

Our phonics sounds this week are: er and ow (snow). We will also be working on review lessons to recap what we have learnt recently.

Our harder-to-read-and-spell words are: tall, when, what, said).

Things to remember

This is Science Week. In the older classes, children will engage in various science subject-specific activities this week.

As part of our Understanding the World curriculum, over the next few weeks, we will be learning about how creatures and other living things grow. We will be learning about how chicks are born and grow from an egg.

We will also be learning about plants, how they grow, how we use them for food, and what we need to do in order to look after them.
