This year, Lent began on Wednesday 18th February and, although Ash Wednesday this year unusually fell during the half-term break, children from Year 1 upwards marked the beginning of this most special liturgical season when we returned to school. We were delighted to recommence our Lenten journeys as a school family.
The ashes, made from last year’s Palm Sunday palms, remind us of our call to repentance and our journey with Jesus. Receiving ashes is a sacred sign that helps us grow in faith. The ashes are placed on our foreheads in the shape of a cross with the words, “Remember that you are dust, and to dust you shall return,” or “Repent and believe in the Gospel.”
Keeping the ashes on throughout the day serves as a simple but powerful reminder of our commitment to God during Lent. As a Catholic community, we are called during this holy season to pray, to fast and to give. We encourage you to support your children in living out these three pillars of Lent through prayer at home, small acts of self-denial, and generosity towards others.
We are also delighted to share that our Year 6 residential was enjoyed by all at the beginning of this week. The children represented Sacred Heart with gusto, demonstrating resilience, teamwork and endless enthusiasm throughout their time away. Well done, Year 6!
